Yeshua

Name of Video: Jeshua: discovering the real Jesus. 89 min, 2 videos.

Purpose: to increase understanding by giving background on “the profound Jewish atmosphere in which Jesus grew up and carried out his ministry.”

Category of Video: Bible Study aid.

Content

A journalist narrates a tour through Holy Land sites and relates them to teachings of Jesus. Video 1 focuses on the religious background of the time in which Jesus lived. Video 2 visits significant Jewish celebrations, relating them to words and figures Jesus used in his teaching.

Considerations

Level of media sophistication required to understand video:

High. Visual images are almost entirely of modern-day Israel, so that accompanying Scripture readings sometimes clash with what is being shown. For example, an image of babies in a modern hospital recurs several times in the video when passages are read about the birth of Jesus. Modern fishermen from Galilee and workers for a harvest are shown in conjunction with scriptural passages. In addition, visually interesting but potentially confusing techniques such as “layering” of images (reminiscent of windows on a computer screen) are employed to keep a modern viewer’s attention.

Type of audience for whom this video might be useful:

The broader Bible translation team. Very helpful for showing what the Holy Land looks like today, therefore would be useful in discussing such key terms as desert, grapes, sheep, etc. Helpful for communicating religious and cultural landscape against which Jesus’ teaching and terminology can be best understood.

I wouldn’t recommend this for general showing in language communities of “unsophisticated” video viewers, but it could be very useful for students (and translators) of the Bible.

Narrator and characters pictured are all modern-day.

Intended to be biblically accurate, but requires some mental adjustments to account for differences in modernity. Strives to interpret Scripture from a Bible-times-and-culture perspective.
