Brief Summary

How to use the Luke Video for evangelization.

Introduction

It was our first training course for Quechua Catechists (Catholic lay workers) to learn how to use the Luke Video to evangelize and teach the Word of God to their people.

Key Factors

What Was Done

First, they attended a Bible study on evangelization, salvation, and redemption. You can’t evangelize others if you haven’t been evangelized yourself. They were told about the many ways to give people opportunities to respond to the Gospel message. (As Quechua-speaking Catholics, it was necessary to know their feelings about the evangelical invitation at the end of the Jesus Video.) They were told that this is just one way that has been effective in many languages and cultures around the world.

Then they watched the last six minutes of the Spanish Jesus Video. This ends with the prayer to receive Christ. They were silent, spellbound, and didn't say a word. When they were asked, “Well, what did you think?” tears were streaming down their cheeks. All six answered, shaking their heads up and down, “We prayed the prayer! We prayed the prayer!” This was not the expected reply. But this was their answer. It was effective and produced the desired results, even though it was in Spanish, their second language.

Later they translated, recorded, and dubbed that portion of the Jesus Video into Quechua to show at the end of the Luke Video. After the training, they left with TV/VCR units, solar panels, and batteries.

Results

These men and others like them have been visiting hundreds of Quechua villages. All over the Andes Mountains of Conchucos, they have been showing the video, evangelizing, and teaching the Word of God. Thousands have prayed that prayer, and lives have been radically changed. Following that example we have translated and dubbed that portion of the Jesus Video into all the dialects of Quechua, including many languages of the Peruvian jungle where they have the Luke Video, and it produces the same results. Lives are changed!
