Stories from Africa
From SPARK
One-sentence summary
African stories for children, ending with a Biblical application.
Description
These stories for children are set in Africa, with African themes. Four of these six short stories would be suitable for translation into African languages. A storyteller would find them easy to use. Each story begins with a full page, black and white drawing. The drawings would be useful as take-home reminders or as coloring pages. Each story has at least one other smaller line drawing.
The four useful titles are:
- Jabo’s Mystery Box: The story of a grumbler. Country setting – Togo.
- The Girl Who Sang in the Goathouse. Country setting – Nigeria.
- Lion in the Path! Country setting – Sudan.
- Dija and the House of Medicine. Country setting – Un-named African country.
Considerations
- The stories are short enough to hold the attention of children.
- Each story ends with a good Christian moral application.
- Two of the stories, "Rescue by Airplane" and "Thank You, Debbie!", were written for western children and would not be useful with African children.
Limitations
Guidelines for Use
- These stories would be useful in Sunday Schools, in a Vacation Bible School, or simply told as stories by a storyteller during gatherings.
- They could be presented in a CD format.
- They could be used as radio dramas for children.
