Spell Checking - How to Add

Spell Checking is best done by adding an extension to the local web browser. Instructions for adding spell checking to both Fire Fox and Internet Explorer are given below.

Fire Fox

The latest 2.0.X version of FireFox already has built in spell checking. A useful spelling tool for earlier versions of FireFox is found at Aspell FireFox addon. Follow the instructions below to add this capability to your version of FireFox. You will need to shut down your FireFox and start it again to make the capability functional.

Instruction for MS Windows users:

You need to install Aspell and an Aspell dictionary. Download the files from the URLs shown below and run them on your machine.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer has a spell checking add on called ieSpell. This spell checker can look up word definitions in an on-line dictionary. More information is found at http://www.iespell.com/ Download ieSpell from here http://www.iespell.com/download.php

Minimum system requirements:
  • Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher
  • 7 MB of free disk space (More if you install the optional language packs)

Installation instructions:

  • Click on the download link above.
  • Choose "Open this file from its current location"
  • Click on the "OK" button when prompted.
  • After installation has completed, restart your browser.
  • There will be a new menu item called "ieSpell" under the "Tools" menu
  • There will be a new icon on your toolbar.

The toolbar icon will appear only if you have not customized your toolbar. If you have customized your toolbar, you will have to manually select the icon in the "Customize Toolbar" dialog. For those already using ieSpell, you do not have to uninstall the previous version before installing the new one.

How to use ieSpell:

  • If you are using Internet Explorer, you can access ieSpell in one of the following three ways:
    • Under the "Tools" menu, click on "ieSpell" item to start the spelling check or click on the "ieSpell Options" to configure ieSpell.
    • Click on the ieSpell toolbar button (if enabled) to activate the spelling check.
    • Right click in the browser and in the menu that appears, click on the "ieSpell" item to start the spelling check or click on the "ieSpell Options" to configure ieSpell.
  • If you are using a web browser based on the IE engine (e.g. AOL, MSN, NetCaptor, NeoPlanet, etc), then only the last option (i.e. using the right-click menu) is available to you.
