Ap u Debleskro Drom (On God’s Road), is Ken Anderson’s Pilgrim’s Progress in a Gypsy language. Getting permission for this project was rather easy, but the project was technically difficult.

Ken Anderson Films did not require any funding for the rights. They asked payment for making the master and technical work. The file they sent was not an AVI file, but an MPEG file. Our DDCLIP could not read it. So a local video service charged us to convert it to an AVI file. Since the picture was too small they re-mixed certain parts onto a test video. This made the lip syncs clear. They didn’t include human sound effects in some parts of the M&E track. Our sound effects library provided those we needed.

We also had different expectations for review and correction by national speakers. They planned to make one master. When it was sent back with corrections, they were not pleased.

These expectations should be clarified before production begins. This is true when using Pilgrim’s Progress or other products, such as their animated children’s Bible story series.

Reference The first, Ap u Debleskro Drom (On God’s Road), is Ken Anderson’s Pilgrim’s Progress. Getting permission for this project was rather easy, but the project was technically difficult.

Ken Anderson Films did not require any funding for the rights, just reimbursement for making the master and technical work of that nature. But then the AVI file was, first of all, not an AVI file. They sent me an MPEG file which DDCLIP wouldn’t read. They charged me for that, of course. I then had to pay a local video service to convert it to an AVI file. The picture was so small that I really couldn’t see the lips well enough to easily lip sync. When they sent me a test video back, they had re-mixed certain parts which made the lip syncs out of sync. Also, they didn’t include human sound effects in some parts of the M&E track such as laughter in the Vanity Fair scene. Consequently I had to pull things off of the sound effects library.

We also had different expectations for review and correction by native speakers, which we discovered after the fact. They anticipated only making one master. When I sent it back after review with some corrections, they were less than pleased.

I would recommend clarifying all these sorts of things up front should anyone subsequently use Pilgrim’s Progress or any of their other products such as their animated children’s Bible story series.
