This is the first in the series republished by Christian Focus Publications in 2007. All the Jungle Doctor books are based on the real life experiences of Australian doctor Paul White. He served at Mvumi Hospital Tanzania, East Africa. Dr. White was the doctor in charge from 1938 through 1941. Africans are now in charge of the hospital. Since these books were written, Africa has changed. Many of the same sicknesses are still present. There are new ones too.

Treatment of illness my change, but the good news of Jesus never changes! It gives new life to those who listen and obey. The Jungle Doctor books are about giving medical help, teaching good health practices, and telling the good news of Jesus to Africans. .

In the first five books Dr. White tells the story. But the African adults and children, are the main characters. Jungle Doctor and the Whirlwind, is an adventure story about hospital workers. They treat sicknesses such as dysentery and malaria, and injuries to people's bodies. This story teaches the causes, prevention, and treatments of these to sicknesses.

In this book children learn that even Christians are tempted by sin. When the African assistant to the doctor is lured away by the desire for more money and worldly pleasures, the hospital faces extra work. The stranger who causes much trouble and unrest finally faces the results of his sin and pays for it with his life.

Considerations

  • Children ages 8-14 years will enjoy this story.
  • Pages 6-17 give facts about the author, Tanzania, and the two sicknesses that are part of the story. A list of characters, their jobs, of African expressions and words, their meanings, are included in this opening section.
  • Each of these six Jungle Doctor books are adventure stories that will interest of children and adults in most cultures.
  • The author uses African parables to explain both the need to stay healthy and to be a believer in Jesus.
  • The good news of Jesus is clearly explained. Children are shown how to believe in Jesus.
  • Line drawings help children understand the story.
  • These books have been translated into more than 107 different languages.

Limitations

  • Some of the line drawings show only parts of people or the scene. This will need to be explained to children who are not picture literate.

  • As audio books with the line drawings shown on flip charts.
  • In schools, Sunday Schools, and Bible clubs.
