Date(s): May 4, 2005
Vernacular Media Staff: Durk Meijer Attendee(s), Title(s) and Organization(s): Carol Dowsett, VP International Corporate Communications
Location: Chiang Mai
Goals: help Carol understand the SPARK concept and seek approval for going public.
Background Information: almost 5 years of collaboration and development have brought SPARK to a critical point that it needs to be released to the public. Carol’s endorsement of the concept and publication guidelines are a key part of SPARK going public.
Content (Activities, meeting notes, schedules, outlines, hand outs): Carol was very interested in understanding the concept. I explained that SPARK is a mission-community project which VMS facilitates. Our primary role is to facilitate the sharing of valuable information, which can come from anyone, both within our family of organizations or outside, including VMS. We would provide some sort of disclaimer, explicitly or implicitly, that the contributors are solely responsible for the opinions and recommendations on the site. We do screen the information according to the guidelines from our family of organizations before public release, so it won’t contain any information that may jeopardize any people or work. Carol said that is a popular and relevant way of using the SPARK concept and that it is done more within our corporation. She confirmed that SPARK would fit within those parameters and could be public. Since SPARK is served by VMS, who is part of JAARS, she wanted us to work through Bud Speck to work out any details in regard to publication guidelines, relating to content check and the site not representing our corporation, but only being a service provided by our corporation. As such it should not reflect to being a corporate web-site, but it could link people to our corporate web-sites.
Recommendations: Follow through with Bud Speck (which already is happening)
