Bold Believers in Vietnam
From SPARK
One-sentence summary
Children's Activity book
Description
This book is 78 pages long. It gives a review of the historical conflicts between Vietnam and other countries that wanted to rule them. Geography activities include the flag of Vietnam and a map. Another activity shows how many people live in Vietnam. Then there are pages of facts and activities about the language and people groups. Five pages deal with Buddhism and five pages describe communism and ancestor worship. Short stories tell how Christians are persecuted by those who do not believe in Jesus.
The activities that help students learn more about the country are:
- Making a time line
- Ideas for history research (This will not be possible in some cultures)
- Boat people
- Hmong story cloths
- Animals of Southeast Asia
- Styles in Vietnam
- Recipes
- Two one-act plays
- Pages to color
Considerations
- The information and activities in this book are best for children who are between the ages of 9–12 years.
- Hebrews 13:3 encourages people to pray for those in Vietnam. The book uses the King James Version. I suggest an easier version for translating such as the Contemporary English Version. “Remember the Lord's people who are in jail and be concerned for them. Don't forget those who are suffering, but imagine that you are there with them.”
- This is a good way to make the study of geography more personal by learning about real people who have decided to follow Jesus in spite of opposition from families and others.
Limitations
- Not all activities will be culturally appropriate for all people groups. But some would be useful in many cultures.
- Activities like crossword puzzles and word searches may need to be adapted when translated into other languages.
Guidelines for Use
- This information could be recorded on audio cassette or CD.
- The information and activities in this book would be useful in a Sunday School or Christian school. This would encourage children to pray for people in Vietnam who encounter difficulties and dangers when they decide to believe in Jesus.
