One-sentence summary

Children's Activity book

Description

A sixty-one page spiral book written to educate and encourage elementary age children to learn about the Asian country of Afghanistan. They learn about children and adult Christians in this country who face strong persecution for their beliefs. A main goal of this book is to encourage children to pray for these people.

The book includes the following sections:

  • Afghanistan Facts
  • Map of Afghanistan and its neighbors
  • Afghanistan/US Timeline
  • Muslim beliefs are compared to Christian beliefs
  • The Taliban: Quiz and learn answers
  • Afghan school stories with simple activities for the students to do
  • Bold believer stories which includes simple activities for the students
  • Afghan ”Snapshots” are interesting details of animals and life and customs in Afghanistan
  • Mullah Nasrudin Jokes
  • Dari is one of the two main languages of Afghanistan.
  • Afghan clothing
  • Afghan Homes
  • Answer key for some of the activities presented in the book.

Considerations

  • The colored pictures in the book add interest, but many are small and are actual photos which may be difficult for children in some cultures to understand.
  • Much of the information provided in this book could be recorded on audio cassette or CD and the colored pictures used in a flipchart format.
  • Most of the information and activities found in this book would be useful in a Sunday School or Christian school setting where the children could be encouraged to pray for the people in Afghanistan who face difficulties and dangers when deciding to follow Jesus.
  • The Bible verse to encourage this prayer is Hebrews 13:3 (The book uses the English King James Version (KJV) but I suggest an easier version to translate from such as the Contemporary English Version (CEV).
  • “Remember the Lord's people who are in jail and be concerned for them. Don't forget those who are suffering, but imagine that you are there with them.”
  • This book offers a way to make the study of geography more personal by learning about real people (often children) who have decided to follow Jesus in spite of opposition from family and others.

Limitations

  • The two activity pages comparing the history of Afghanistan and the United States between 1747 and the present, is not going to be applicable or useful in countries other than the U.S.
  • Not all activities suggested will be appropriate in every culture but enough are usable to make the book useful in some format in many cultures.
  • All Bible verses quoted are from KJV. A suggested substitute that would be easier to translate would be from the CEV.
  • In some Muslim controlled countries this book might cause serious trouble if authorities became aware of it.
  • The Mullah Nasrudin Joke page may not be appropriate in many cultures.
