One-sentence summary

Children's story about a Christian Nigerian boy.

Description

Tonko is a young boy from Nigeria. His father died but he lives with his mother, two sisters, one brother and his pet goat. Tonko's family are Christians and he desires to “grow tall inside as well as be man of the house” for his mother. Sometimes he gets into trouble. One reason is Audu, a bigger boy who is a bully, does mean things to him. Tonko admits he doesn't always do the right thing but he does want to learn more about being a Christian so he can continue to grow tall inside.

Considerations

  • The book has 80 pages.
  • The book has one black and white line drawing for each of the ten chapters.
  • These illustrations are front views with no odd angles.
  • A few of the drawings do show only a portion of the people or objects. For children who are not used to looking at pictures, these would need explanation.
  • The drawings are typical of village life in Nigeria.
  • Each chapter has a Bible verse that applies to it.
  • The book has no mention of western influences outside of lorry's (trucks) being used for travel to the closest town.

Limitations
